Servicing them may be possible only if the design has the bearing seals exposed. Full one piece sealed cartridge style bottom brackets (octalink, square taper) are simply replace only. Depending on which sealed cartridge you have, you would need the appropriate tool to remove and replace them.

How long does a sealed bottom bracket last?

They can get "brinneled" or damaged in a crash or something, but 1500 miles is absurd. As for a bottom bracket, on the low end, maybe 5000 miles. The basic Shimano one most people use (UN51/55/similar) can reasonably expect 10k+ miles. But sometimes you get unlucky and get a bottom bracket that lasts maybe 500 miles.

Do bottom brackets need servicing?

Servicing your cranks or bottom bracket should be part of your regular maintenance on your mountain bike. Just a simple clean on your cranks and dust seals can make a huge difference in how they spin, as well as helping all your parts last a bit longer.

Do you grease a sealed bottom bracket?

no matter what type of BB it is, always lube it.

Can you tighten a sealed cartridge bottom bracket?

Bottom Bracket Installation

Don't tighten the left-side yet. Thread the cartridge all the way into the right side of the frame by turning it counter-clockwise. Tighten it with about 25-30 foot-pounds of pressure (300-360 inch-pounds) using a torque wrench.

How can I tell if my bottom bracket needs replacing?

To check if your BB needs replacing, drop the chain off of the smallest chainring and spin the cranks. If there's a side-to-side wobble, or feeling of grittiness, it's time for a new one.

Why does my bottom bracket creak?

Most of the time, the true cause is a loose chainring bolt—tighten them up and that'll quiet most creaks. After you check the chainring bolts and if you still hear the noise, look at your pedals, crank bolts, seatpost, and seat. By checking these first, you'll save an hour of digging into your bottom bracket.

How much does it cost to replace bottom bracket?

A new bottom bracket can vary wildly in cost, from $15 all the way up to $250(£10-£180), so it largely depends on how much you are willing to pay.

How do you grease a bottom bracket without removing it?

Two suggestions:

  1. Do the "leaving the bike lying on a side" thing and use motor oil. It's much better than WD-40 but not as good as grease.
  2. I have a can of spray lithium grease. It's thicker than oil and you might be able to spray something like that into the bottom bracket between the axle and the cup.

Can I use lithium grease on bottom bracket?

Lithium grease is fine, you can't tell about the drag once you are riding. Water proof is a plus big time. I think the campy one is lithium too. Something is wrong with yor bottom bracket.

How often should you replace crankset?

After 5,400 miles it is reasonable to replace the rear cassette and chain. The front chainrings may need replacing if they have been ridden with a wornout chain. The rest of the crank: the spindle cranks and spider should be fine. Sometimes it is cheaper to replace the whole crankset.

How long can a BB last?

It depends on too many factors to make any generalizations. Properly adjusted, and discounting weather related factors, all the bearings on a bike should last close to forever. Back in the bad old days of "primitive" steel spindles and threaded cup bottom brackets, most would outlast the bike, or 25-50,000+ miles.

Should I grease my crankset?

It is likely, unless your bicycle is quite old, that it has sealed bearings in the crankset, so there is no real need to grease them yourself. It is good practice to visually inspect and clean them regularly, but they do not need deep maintenance unless you encounter rough movement or an unusual sound coming from them.

Should I grease crank spindle?

With or without lubricant, in use, cranks will make metal-to-metal contact with the spindle, causing fretting erosion of the steel spindle for all but the lightest riders. Lubricating the spindle for assembly assures a predictable press fit for a given torque.

What is a threaded bottom bracket?

Threaded bottom brackets use a shell with internal threads to hold threaded parts. The frame shell may be threaded directly at the shell, or there may be an insert installed that has internal threads.

Should I grease square taper bottom bracket?

They advised: “Grease the tapers, but make sure you only tighten the bolts once, then leave them alone.” Their tests had shown that a “dry” spindle/crank interface did not result in a consistent press-fit between the parts.

What is marine grade grease?

WD-40 Specialist® Marine-Grade Grease is a lithium-based grease that provides superior lubrication and corrosion protection in wet and moist environments. It was engineered to provide superior lubrication for corrosive marine applications.

Can I use a 68mm bottom bracket in a 73mm shell?

You could install it, but it will shift your chainline, shift the centerline of your feet, clearance issues might arise on the non-drive side, and you might be leaving some BB shell threads exposed on the non-drive side as well.

What is a sealed bearing bottom bracket?

Sealed cartridge bottom brackets are normally two pieces, a unit holding the spindle and bearings that screws into the bottom bracket shell from the drive side and a screw-in support cup (often made of light alloy or plastic) that supports the spindle and bearing assembly on the non-drive side.

What is an octalink bottom bracket?

Octalink Bottom Brackets. This system, designed by Shimano, was the first successful alternative to the older square taper. The Octalink system uses a larger and stiffer spindle with eight splines. The splines provide a greater contact area between crank and spindle for a stiffer interface.

What is Teflon grease used for?

PTFE lubricant spray is often used on nuts, bolts, and washers to protect them from exposure to things such as oil and seawater. The non-stick characteristics of PTFE lubricant also allow for easy tightening and loosening of fasteners, meaning less elbow grease required!
